South Belfast Alternatives Return

16th Nov 2018

Today, South Belfast Alternatives returned today to P6/7.  Brian and Gareth had developed the photos that the children took last week of their surrounding area. The pupils worked in groups to sort the photos into positive and negative images of our area. They then picked one negative image and talked about how that part of the community could be improved.  In their groups, the children wrote a pitch to try and sell their idea to a panel, made up of Gareth, Brian and Mrs Annette. It was a bit like Dragon's Den in the classroom.  The ideas included: a car park for the teachers being made in the wasteland area across from the school, as this would improve road safety in the area; the community gardens reopening so the children could have a green space to visit, grow plants in and spot wildlife and; organising a litter-picking session in the area to help reduce the amount of rubbish left on the streets.  I was so proud of all the ideas the children generated and how well they pitched these. Gareth and Brian will discuss these ideas over the next few weeks and will return to let us know which idea we will try to make a reality... exciting.
